Before you install the gravel it is a good idea to put down a weed barrier of some sortold newspaper works great for thisjust put it over the whole path area in a layer two or three sheets thick. Next evenly distribute the pea gravel over the entire area of your path and rake it out smooth filling the path back up to ground level. With your gravel now in place its time to start placing your stepping stones. There are many choices for stones. You can choose from a variety of manmade products or use natural flagstone.
The first option can be used to enhance an old fence added to the outside of your house or even as a free standing piece of artwork. Here is where it gets fun and creative you can make anything that you love. I personally love flowers and on my deck is a flower garden with some of them as tall as seven feet. I found the flower designs I wanted created a template out of paper traced around it onto MDF board (you can use 3/8 or ½ thick). You can also free hand a design remember the sky is the limit to what you create. Use a skill saw and cut out your design clean off the edges and remove any excess saw dust.
Another option is to play with different colors. Different stone types will surely encompass a complete palate of colors among stepping stones in your area or can alternately be painted to match your garden accessories or the colors of your home. You can even make personalizing these stones a fun family activityallowing each one of your children their own personal stone making a mark and truly putting your familys personality into your backyard decor. If youre not particularly crafty and would like more creative looking stones there are other stones for sale that incorporate mosaiclike designs or are beautifully painted for your aesthetic enjoyment.
