You may choose to do this when choosing decorative stepping stones. For example some decorative stepping stones come with a beautifully painted picture of hummingbirds or butterflies on them. When using these decorative stepping stones for your backyard you may want to consider using them for decorative purposes only or where they will be stepped on very little.
The first option can be used to enhance an old fence added to the outside of your house or even as a free standing piece of artwork. I found the flower designs I wanted created a template out of paper traced around it onto MDF board (you can use 3/8 or ½ thick). You can also free hand a design remember the sky is the limit to what you create. Use a skill saw and cut out your design clean off the edges and remove any excess saw dust.
