Garden stones and statues also make the perfect gift for a friend in need of a landscaping makeover. With the selection made available today you will find something for anyone. Concrete stepping stones can add a quiet elegance to gardens and paths around the home. Making them is fairly easy. One of the best features of creating your own concrete stepping stones is that you can make shapes and colors that are not standardized by commercial use. One of the most versatile easy to use and imaginative accessories for your garden is the stepping stone.
Place the stones the length of your path so that they are a comfortable stepping distance apart and then start setting them into the gravel. Pea gravel is easy to dig so you can simply use your hands to scoop out a hole for each stonethen push down on the stone with both hands and wiggle it downward into the gravel until it is stable. Remember to wear work gloves and steel toed shoes when handling these heavy stoneslift with your legs not your back. Thats pretty much it. You now have an attractive durable weed resistant path which you can enjoy for many years to come.
Normally there are 3 types of base material used depending on the use of the stone. Regular concrete is used most often when a stone is actually part of a pathway and decorations such as small mosaic tiles or colored stones are used for visual effect. Stepping stone concrete is used when a more intricate pattern (or 3d effect from a mold) is used. It is finer grained so there is less likely to be an air pocket in a detailed area. Finally there is plaster of paris; it is VERY fine grained and will hold the best detail of all; but lacks the strength necessary to hold up under harsh weather or traffic conditions. Garden stepping stones of this material should be ornamental only and in an area protected from weather and harsh temperatures.
