These stones arent just great as walkways to your porch but also as a great decorative or functional walkway through flower beds or gardens. You dont have to worry about the kids walking through your tulips if they have a useful path that you constructed using gorgeous stepping stones you bought for a very inexpensive price. They require absolutely no upkeep and will add a little variety to your garden with very little effort.
You will need a good sealer to make the board water proof go to your local paint or hardware store and get their opinion on the best product for your area. When you apply the sealer play close attention to the edges make sure they are completely sealed. I always use two to three coats. Now the fun begins start painting. You can use any water based paint in any color choice you want. I usually put a couple coats of paint especially the base color.
Normally there are 3 types of base material used depending on the use of the stone. Regular concrete is used most often when a stone is actually part of a pathway and decorations such as small mosaic tiles or colored stones are used for visual effect. Stepping stone concrete is used when a more intricate pattern (or 3d effect from a mold) is used. It is finer grained so there is less likely to be an air pocket in a detailed area. Finally there is plaster of paris; it is VERY fine grained and will hold the best detail of all; but lacks the strength necessary to hold up under harsh weather or traffic conditions. Garden stepping stones of this material should be ornamental only and in an area protected from weather and harsh temperatures.
