Along with the different varieties of stepping stones for sale at your local home store there are countless different ways you can arrange these stones in your yard for a unique entrance to your home that fits your personality. Experiment with different shapes patterns or perhaps a mix and match a variety of sizes or types of stone for a fun look.
Normally there are 3 types of base material used depending on the use of the stone. Regular concrete is used most often when a stone is actually part of a pathway and decorations such as small mosaic tiles or colored stones are used for visual effect. Stepping stone concrete is used when a more intricate pattern (or 3d effect from a mold) is used. It is finer grained so there is less likely to be an air pocket in a detailed area. Finally there is plaster of paris; it is VERY fine grained and will hold the best detail of all; but lacks the strength necessary to hold up under harsh weather or traffic conditions. Garden stepping stones of this material should be ornamental only and in an area protected from weather and harsh temperatures.
A personalized stepping stone with highquality engraving is a unique personal gift that will add to a gardens ambiance for years ahead. To create a piece of art that will be forever part of a garden consider your recipients interests beyond gardening. If your intended loves to read a quote by Dickinson or Frost is in order. If the familys faithful feline hangs out in the garden an engraved cat silhouette pays tribute to this gardening assistant. (Every chipmunk chased away is a lily flower saved.) Golfing fanatics will smile when receiving a series of stones with birdie fore and Hole in One engraved into them.
