If there is sod to remove from your path area use the sod cutter to cut a checkerboard pattern inside the borders of the path dividing the sod into approximately 1 squares (for easy removal). Next remove the sod and soil to a depth of about 4. Now that you have your path excavated its time for the pea gravelthis can be purchased at your local landscape firm or at a crushed rock supplier. Pea gravel is a product made up of small rounded stones which is easy to spread and easy on the body if you fall.
Decoration for these stones is limited only by your imagination. From a simple hand or paw print (name and date optional) up to a recreation of your favorite piece of art made out of shattered teacups your inner artist can run wild. Even photographs can be used simply put it between 2 sheets of glass and seal the edges with silicone. When using glass as decoration for your stones it is best to place the glass in the container first laying it out as you wish it to be in the finished product then carefully pour the concrete over it; this way there will be no sharp exposed areas.
Personalized stepping stones make great gifts for nongardeners as well. Commemorate special occasions by having a stepping stone engraved. Celebrate a new birth with the newborns name and date. Help new couples remember their wedding and a proud bowler his first perfect game. Engraved stepping stones in landscape beds near a houses front door tell stories of the family inside each a reminder of important life events. The gift of an engraved garden stepping stone for a special occasion will be appreciated long after the event and will give the best gift of all. Each time the recipient steps over the stone it will conjure memories of joyous times past.
