a liquid state is a developing suite of works for saxophone and tape or live electronics written for Jeffery Kyle Hutchins by Freida Abtan. The first movement, rivulets, features material improvised by Hutchins under Abtan’s guided direction. Abtan manipulated and transformed the material through digital processing to create new music, deconstructed and re-scored for live performance. rivulets was premiered at Virginia Tech’s Cube Theatre in October 2024 where it was spatialized over a 140-speaker array.
